24 Hours in La Jolla with Sophia Marie
August 1, 2025
We asked La Jolla local, Sophia Marie, to share how she spends a summer day in the place she calls home. From early beach walks to iced oat lattes and sunset music, Sophia’s guide covers exactly where to go and when. Consider this your go-to for a laid-back, coastal day in La Jolla.
Morning
Where’s your first stop for coffee, and what’s your order?
There are so many incredible coffee spots in La Jolla, but my first stop has to be Elixir for an iced oat milk latte.
Best beach or trail for an early swim or walk?
My heart will always be with Marine Street Beach. Growing up, that was always the local spot. It’s right in the heart of La Jolla so you can walk to the village easily, it’s not quite as busy as Windansea or the Shores, it’ just got everything. If you want something even more private, you could venture out to Black’s beach in La Jolla Farms, especially if you want a nice swim. For a lovely morning stroll, I’d walk along Coast Walk.
Favorite casual breakfast spot (what to order + best seat)?
My new favorite breakfast spot is Blue Whale. They have somany great options but I’m loving their breakfast burrito right now. Order at the bar and sit outside to enjoy the weather. Don’t pass up one of their morning pastries or rotating daily coffee menu for a fun treat. Sugar and Scribe Chilaquiles are also a must and don’t miss the Lemon Ricotta pancake for the table – they are famous for it.
For a hint of childhood nostalgia I might hit up Harry’s Diner. Their golden waffles or eggs Benedict are great and they still have that old school diner feel.
Midday
Best place for a casual lunch and what’s your go-to dish?
If we’re talking super casual I would grab takeout and head to the beach with my lunch. I might pick up sandwiches from Girard Gourmet like Italian sub or their BLT with lemon pepper. Taco Shop is also always a good idea, but the line can get pretty long for lunch so I usually aim for off hour times.
A local shop, gallery, or boutique you always stop in
Aviator Nation is about as SoCal as you can get, but I’m also really into Hammitt right now, their leather goods are to die for. My dog, Archie, is currently sporting a Hammitt collar and leash.
Favorite mid-day activity: cove, tide pools, art, or something unexpected?
You can’t go wrong with a Torrey Pines hike. Or you could explore the La Jolla Cove Cave for a bit more adventure. If you just want to chill and see a gorgeous view you could walk to the Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial. If you’re seeking a hit of adrenaline, head to the glider port and some hang gliding action – can’t beat that view of the coastline.
Golden Hour to Evening
Go-to spot for a drink at sunset (and where to sit)
Georges at the Cove. The second level bar is great, but the rooftop terrace is even better. More sun exposure though!
Summer dinner favorite—must-order dish + pro tip for getting a table
I love Isola for dinner, but I would definitely make a reservation. Their classic margarita pizza is divine and so is the pomodoro.
Where are you ending the night: dessert, drink, or quiet overlook?
I might grab a Bobboi gelato and walk down to the Cove. Or if I’m feeling like a nightcap, the Living Room has a stellar espresso martini and quite a fun vibe. Le Coq has live music until midnight and their happy meal is amazing…an adult take on a classic.
Local Tips
What’s one La Jolla spot more people should know about?
I love the walk down to Blacks Beach…not a lot of people know about it or assume the barrier to entry is too high but it’s a great walk and an incredible payoff once you get to the beach.
Any secret or smart parking tips?
The metering is heavily enforced so be careful when leaving your car in a two hour spot. Down from Orli, towards Pearl Street, there are unmetered parking spaces which are a nice find. Honestly, the earlier the better as once it hits noon parking becomes a challenge.
What’s one thing you never visit La Jolla without?
Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a towel! I love Verabella MoistureScreen. I’d also bring a light jacket or light layers, although the weather is gorgeous, the coastal breeze can pick up in the evening quite a bit!
Advice for a first-time visitor in the summer?
Plan ahead! It gets quite busy and last minute accommodations are expensive and oftentimes unavailable. If you plan to stay local to La Jolla village, bring some walking shoes as that is the easiest way to get around. Leave your car in a parking structure for peace of mind which avoids any tickets which are pricey. Everything is very walkable!
