Orli La Jolla

The Holidays in La Jolla

From Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day, La Jolla settles into a slower, softer season. The summer crowds are gone, daytime temperatures usually sit in the 60s, and the coast puts on a show of its own, with harbor seal pups on the beach at the Children’s Pool and gray whales passing offshore on their winter migration.

Orli La Jolla is a 13-room boutique hotel set in a restored Irving Gill property on Draper Avenue, two blocks from the ocean and a short walk from Girard Avenue and Prospect Street. Irving Gill was a pioneering American modernist architect who spent the majority of his career in SoCal, developing a revolutionary, stripped down architectural style defined by geometric purity, reinforced concrete, and a deep integration with nature. It makes an easy base for the holidays in San Diego, close enough to walk to almost everything you will want to do.

Why Spend the Holidays in La Jolla

Winter in San Diego is gentle. A December day in La Jolla usually means a light layer for the morning walk along the coast, clear afternoons and a sunset over the Pacific a little before 5 p.m. Evenings turn cool, but rarely cold enough to keep you from walking to dinner, which makes the season feel like a getaway for anyone flying in from a snowier part of the country. The La Jolla Village itself is the other reason to come. Traffic and parking around San Diego get tight over the holidays, and La Jolla rewards anyone who can leave the car behind. From Orli, the beach, the Children's Pool, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and dozens of restaurants, galleries and boutiques are a few minutes away on foot, and the hotel's beach cruisers cover anything a little farther. La Jolla also keeps its own traditions. The La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival has been part of the Village's December since 1957, and its route runs a few minutes from the hotel, giving a holiday stay here a real hometown feel.

Thanksgiving in La Jolla

Thanksgiving turns naturally into a long weekend by the coast. Spend the morning walking along the water from the Children's Pool to La Jolla Cove, where sea lions lounge on the rocks year-round, then sit down to Thanksgiving dinner at a Village restaurant within walking distance of the hotel. Keep Friday free for the galleries and independent boutiques on Girard Avenue and Prospect Street, a calmer shopping experience over a crowded mall. Village restaurants fill quickly for Thanksgiving, so reserve dinner a few weeks ahead, ideally when you book your room.

Christmas in La Jolla

The Christmas season in La Jolla begins with the Village parade on the first Sunday of December, which usually falls on the same weekend as December Nights at Balboa Park. Arrive on Friday and a single long weekend covers San Diego's largest free holiday festival and La Jolla's own hometown parade. Later in the month the pace slows. Christmas Eve dinner in the Village, a quiet Christmas morning on the coast and harbor seal pups at the Children's Pool add up to a Christmas that feels distinctly Southern Californian. Our Christmas in La Jolla guide covers the season in more detail.

New Year's Eve in La Jolla

La Jolla offers a New Year's Eve built around a long dinner rather than a ticketed party. Watch the last sunset of the year from La Jolla Cove, walk to Eddie V's for dinner, toast at midnight, and be back at the hotel in minutes. No driving and no waiting for a ride. The top of the new year starts with the ocean. A walk along the coast, a cold brew from the hotel's brew bar, and an easy morning in the courtyard make for a gentle start to the year. Our New Year's Eve in La Jolla guide has more ideas for the night itself.

Things to Do in San Diego in December

  • La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival

Held on the first Sunday of December, the parade sets off from Girard Avenue and Kline Street with floats, marching bands, vintage cars, schools and local community groups. A free holiday festival follows at the La Jolla Recreation Center on Prospect Street, just across the street from Orli.

  • December Nights at Balboa Park

San Diego's largest free holiday festival fills Balboa Park on the first weekend of December, with live music on several stages, food vendors, holiday shopping and the park lit for the season. It draws more than 350,000 visitors over two days, so a car service is easier than parking. Balboa Park is about a 25-minute drive from La Jolla.

  • Harbor Seal Pupping Season at the Children's Pool

Each winter, harbor seals give birth on the beach at the Children's Pool, a short walk from the hotel. The beach closes to people from December 15 to May 15 to protect the pups, but you can still watch the seals from the walkway above.

  • Gray Whale Migration

Gray whales migrate along the San Diego coast from December through April. Kayak tours from our partners at Everyday California and the ocean-view plaza at Birch Aquarium at Scripps are two of the best ways to spot them.

Your Holiday Base at Orli La Jolla

Orli occupies two early 20th-century houses designed by Irving Gill, the architect often called the father of California modernism: the George Kautz House and the Kate Sessions House, the latter named for the horticulturist remembered as the mother of Balboa Park. After a two-year restoration, the houses opened as a 13-room boutique hotel in 2022. Every room and suite is designed individually, with details such as record players and typewriters, and the shared spaces feel closer to a private home than a hotel lobby. Guests share a courtyard shaded by century-old olive trees, a lounge, and a brew bar with cold brew and kombucha on tap. Check-in, check-out, and any requests run through the Orli Portal or by chatting with one of the friendly concierges stationed in the courtyard. You can arrive and leave on your own schedule. That flexibility helps when holiday travel days do not go to plan.
