La Jolla Like a Local: Taco Shop Edition

June 21, 2022

San Diego is renowned for its Mexican food, and some of the best of the best is located right in the heart of La Jolla. Whether you’re stepping out for Taco Tuesday, bringing burritos to the beach, or seeking a sit-down date spot, there are a multitude of delicious options to choose from.

Puesto

To enjoy with friends (and a margarita)

With an ever-changing menu and an outdoor patio that can’t be beat, Puesto is our pick for Taco Tuesday or a fun night with friends. Puesto is great for ordering family style: mix and match tacos, throw in some shareables like ceviche and esquite, and don’t forget their extensive list of margaritas! Puesto also offers some of their famous margaritas to-go.

The Taco Stand

To bring to the beach

If you want traditional, Tijuana-style tacos, complete with hand-made tortillas, head on down to Taco Stand at their OG location. Prepare for long lines of hungry patrons during the lunch and dinner rush – proof of just how delicious the tacos are! While we recommend getting a variety to try (two or three tacos is a good size per person), our personal favorites are the Sonora Taco or the Al Pastor. Don’t forget to top your plate with their homemade salsa station.

Jose’s Court Room

To enjoy with music and a view

Mexican restaurant meets sports bar meets La Jolla Institution. If you enjoy loud music, people watching, and a gorgeous view, then head on over to Jose’s. Sit outside and watch the sunset over the ocean at happy hour or catch the big game inside. Share a heaping plate of nachos, indulge in a wet burrito, or sip your way through a pitcher of beer.

Rigoberto’s (6990 La Jolla Blvd)

To indulge late night

Rigoberto’s is open 24 hours, which tells you just about all you need to know! If you want good late night, or even early-next-morning Mexican food, this is the spot for you. Locals rave about the famous El Campeon Burrito (it’s massive) or the loaded nachos and fries. It might be a hole in the wall, but there is a reason the original location has been around so long.
