Today, we’re sharing insights from Fran Blanc on how the organization is driving positive change.

What inspired the creation of +MVMNT? Was there a particular moment or experience that sparked its inception?

At the Positive Movement Foundation, our mission is to inspire and empower the next generation. We address critical needs in underserved San Diego communities by providing students with the tools, resources, and support needed for academic and personal success. Our goal is to bridge gaps and create meaningful opportunities for youth.

How does +MVMNT support and inspire youth to become leaders within their communities?

We offer a range of programs designed to inspire and cultivate leadership, empowering youth to become proactive change-makers. Beyond the initiatives we implement within schools, we collaborate closely with our partner institutions to develop tailored leadership programs that align with their unique values and goals. Each school has its own set of core principles, so we provide financing activities and recognition awards that help motivate students to be the best they can be and to celebrate those who demonstrate exemplary leadership potential.

Can you tell us about the leadership programs? What unique opportunities do they offer?

Our Saturday School program offers diverse classes designed to equip students with essential skills. One of our standout offerings is the Leadership Development course, delivered in partnership with the Travis Manion Foundation. In this class, veterans teach students the core values of leadership and integrity, engaging them in real-world activities to practice these skills. Another key component is our CPR and First Aid class, where students learn life-saving techniques, preparing them to act confidently in emergencies.

We recognize and reward student leadership through programs like Student of the Month, where exemplary students are celebrated at Fun Friday events with prizes like new bicycles. We also partner with local schools for enriching field trips to places like Belmont Park and Dave & Buster’s, offering students fun experiences and a chance to bond with peers.

How can the La Jolla community support +MVMNT’s mission? Are there ways for locals to get involved?

We actively seek to expand community partnerships, valuing collaboration with local individuals and organizations. Opportunities range from volunteering at Fun Friday events and distributing snacks to partnering with local restaurants for student meals. We also welcome partners to teach new classes in our Saturday School program or sponsor Student of the Month awards, recognizing and encouraging leadership.

We offer staff-focused partnership opportunities through Staff Appreciation Events and Luncheons, which foster community and acknowledge staff dedication. Partners can support these events by providing services like yoga, sound baths, massages, or meals from local restaurants to promote staff well-being.

What does Orli’s partnership with +MVMNT mean to the organization?

We are deeply grateful for our partnership with Orli, whose support helps amplify the work of our nonprofit. We firmly believe that empowering the next generation is a collective effort, and it takes the commitment of many to create lasting change. 

What’s next for +MVMNT? Any exciting initiatives on the horizon?

For the 2024-2025 school year, we are proud to partner with eight schools across San Diego, doubling the number of schools we are working with compared to last year. Our aim is to grow these partnerships each year to broaden our impact within the community.

Looking ahead to Summer 2025, we are excited to launch our inaugural Positive Movement Summer Camp—a one-week program designed to extend our support beyond the school year. We are eager to collaborate with local community members to offer engaging and inspiring classes that equip students with valuable skills, preparing them for success in the coming school year and beyond.
